| A NEW PROGRAM: WHOLE FAMILY CATECHESIS
We are very excited about a new program being offered by Religious Education at Notre Dame. Whole-Family Catechesis is geared to people who do not fit into the traditional classroom programs due to family commitments, work, sports, travel, etc. We had a successful pilot program this past year and we are going to open registration up to the entire parish when Fall registration takes place a few months from now.
Your commitment to the program is essential as it will be more work for you, the parent, but it will also be more rewarding for you and your children.
Parents will be the primary catechist of your children and the structure is as follows:
•Receive a packet containing the work for the three weeks.
•Lessons are done at home with your children.
•Complete the work with your child
•Turn the packets in to Director of Religious Education on the fourth week
•Receive a new packet with the next month’s work
•The fourth week, all families come together at Notre Dame; we share a light meal and enjoy each other socially for about a half hour. After dinner the children are split into age appropriate groups going with catechists to talk about the lessons while the parents have time to discuss the lessons with the help of a facilitator. The evening ends with us all coming back together for a final prayer or ceremony. The entire meeting would take about two hours.

| Why to consider Whole Family Catechesis?
Whole Family Catechesis offers your children and you quality time to spend learning about your religion. Your children will learn more from you than they will from a classroom setting. You will learn more about your religion because you’ll be actively teaching and answering questions that arise (We’re always here to help with questions). In the parent group discussion, you will have a chance to learn various aspects of your religion on an adult level. This is a time for you to learn as well as your child.
Another advantage is that you can schedule the lesson time so family issues, sports, lessons, etc. will not be in the way. The only scheduled “must-attend” time would be the fourth week meeting, and we will decide as a group when that will be.
We would begin meeting in late September. We’d have an initial parent meeting like we have for all programs where we would lay out the program, distribute books, syllabus, distribute packets, schedules, decide on the group meeting date, etc.
So think about it and remember that we are going to open registration up to the entire parish when Fall registration takes place a few months from now.

Our Religious Education programs are designed to involve children in the life of the parish as they study Catholic doctrine, the Scriptures, the beliefs and rituals of their faith.
Our Sunday Religious Education Program for Pre-K to Grade 5 students runs from mid-September through April and is divided into two sessions, the first session meets from 9:00 am to 10:15 am, and the second session is from 10:30 am to 11:45 am. Following each session, it is expected parents will attend the Eucharist with their children. Parents are invited on a regular basis to participate in special activities with their children during class time.
Grade six students meet weekly in small groups for study and discussion. The times and locations for these classes vary.
Our Summer Session Religious Education is a two-week program offered as an alternative to the Sunday Program for students in Grades 1-8. Grades 1-6 meet everyday from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon. Grades 7 and 8 meet from 6:30 pm to 9:00 pm. Concentrated and intense, with daily homework, this program also has art, music and projects as an integral part of the curriculm. All students and parents in this program reunite during the school year for classes, discussion and activities. Strong parental involvement is a requirement for this program.
Sacramental Programs Preparation for the sacraments of Reconciliation and Holy Eucharist involves a series of workshops for both children and parents. These workshops are designed to assist the parents in their role as the primary educators of their children through adult instruction. The children participate in small classes and activities, which enhance their learning experience.
Liturgy of the Word for Children Grades 1-4 Each Sunday, from September to May, the Liturgy of the Word is celebrated for children in Grades 1 to 4 in a manner adapted to their age and understanding. Children are dismissed after the Opening Prayer of Mass to share Sunday's Scripture with their peers. They return to their families at the Presentation of the Gifts of Bread and Wine.
